The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process a visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents.

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government.
In the city center there are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets. There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local products. Hermes Palace Mall is located in downtown Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores along with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores.
The main Acehnese breakfast is salted brown rice cooked in coconut milk, which is sold in cafes everywhere. Food stalls and pandang restaurants pop up in the unprotected part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere. On the western outskirts of town along Jl Tengku Iskander as well as around Ulee Kareng there are some nice cafes with serene views of the rice fields.
The center is home to three fast food chains, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travelers, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to get by in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's still best not to go out alone after 10pm.
