There are non-stop overnight buses from Medan to Banda Aceh that take 9-13 hours. Major bus companies like PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have their offices on Jl. Gaja Mada, maidan. The price ranges from 110,000 rupees for a regular seater bus to 200,000 rupees for a wide seater bus.

The main methods of getting around are becak (mototaxi) and labi-labi (public minibus).
