Here are her top tips. Every good gift basket needs a purpose. It could be about a particular holiday or special occasion, but a "just because" theme works too. "If I wanted to make something for a friend and it wasn't her birthday and it wasn't Christmas, I'd think: what does she like to make?"

Once you have a theme in place, you'll want to set a budget. (Otherwise, it's easy to go overboard!) And remember, you don't have to spend a lot to create a heartfelt gift basket, especially if you shop at budget stores like Marshall's or Target.
Step 1: Start With A Theme
Homemade crafts and food gifts also mean something. Time to go shopping! Grab 5-15 items (depending on the size of your cart) that fit your theme. "Pack it up ... think of all the little things that can fill in the blanks," says Stephanie. And don't forget the most important thing: the trash can!
Turn the trash into something you can actually use," suggests Stephanie. "Finding a utilitarian basket is a better way to spend your money." Some of our favorite containers include bags, baskets and boxes. Once you've chosen all your gadgets, it's time to arrange them in an attractive way.

Start with the heaviest items at the bottom or near the back of the bin, then stack them. You can use crumpled paper to add bulk: "It takes up space and makes it look nice," says Stephanie. Or choose a functional filler. "Try socks, a bathrobe, a beach towel, a tea towel—something you can pack but also use," she suggests.
