It's the end of an era for longstanding and prominent downtown Hummelstown businesses where people have filled their prescriptions and bought gifts for decades. Dave and Jean Lutz owned the property at 17 W. Main St. in Hummelstown for 49 years. Now known as Rhoads Hallmark and Gift Shop, it was Rhoads Pharmacy and Gift Shop until 2018. But now the owners plan to close the store on Jan. 31 and have agreed to sell the property to Toys on the Square.

This week, when customers were informed of the closing sales and their aftermath, they packed the store, looked for bargains and left some shelves bare. Dave Lutz said they have inventory. But customers don't just come to the store. They also want to say goodbye.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything," a customer told the couple while PenLive was in the store. "I've been coming here since I was 21." "Our strength is friendly customer service," said Dave Lutz. "[Customers] don't get that much anywhere else anymore, and they miss us because of that, I think."

Rhoads Hallmark and Gift Shop sells everything from greeting cards and ornaments to candles, women's clothing, home decor and kitchenware and other items. Dave Lutz said they offer so many different types of items because of all the gift shows they attend. "We go to six gift shows a year and give things back," he said.

Rhoads Hallmark And Gift Shop - Westley Sandford opened "Sandford's Drug Store" in 1931 at a location along Main Street. The name of the pharmacy was changed to "Rhoads Pharmacy" when Simon Rhoads purchased it in 1953. Dave Lutz, who was a pharmacist for People's Drug, began working at Rhoads Pharmacy around 1970 and encouraged the owner to open a gift shop in the space.

Working for him, we kind of got him in the gift business," he said. In 1973 Dave and Jean bought the company but kept the Rhoads name. "The private pharmacy was very, very popular," said Dave Lutz. "People like to deal with a private person. That's why when we bought the store, we didn't call it, like Hummelstown Pharmacy... They then slightly changed the name to Rhoads Pharmacy & Gift Shop after buying the business. Over the years, the couple expanded the business from about 8,000 to 15,000 square feet, at one point taking over space previously leased from a doctor's and dentist's office.

In 2003, the couple purchased a nearby house built in 1830. The current portion of Hallmark is located on what used to be the previous owner's farm. In 2018, the couple heard CVS was coming to Hummelstown and purchased a parking lot a few blocks away.

Dave Lutz, now 85, was 80 at the time. He said he thought he could compete at the network, but didn't know if he wanted to continue working long hours, and the couple began considering retirement. "Then [CVS] walked in the door and made us an offer we couldn't refuse," he said.

CVS bought the cases and the prescription drugs (Lutz said Rhodes once had a customer base of 10,000 and filled 250 prescriptions a day). But while that marked the end of the pharmacy, the couple decided to keep the gift shop open. "We talk about it and we think about it and we said when you retire, you leave your job and do what you love," Dave Lutz said.

caused some of the problems that contributed to the closing, including inflation. "Because of the reduced revenue, we couldn't hire people who would normally be around," he said. "We went from working 30 hours a week to 50 and working weekends," he said. "We said this is it.
