Heineman’s Winery
Enjoy an afternoon at the winery together. Located less than a mile from downtown Put-in-Bay, the Crystal Caves gift shop offers Heinemann wines and souvenirs, sells geodes, crystals, and gemstones, some of which come directly from the caves. Heinemann Winery has been around since 1888.
Produces locally produced wines. Founded by German immigrant Gustav Heinemann, the winery takes advantage of the island's long growing season along with the humidifying effects of Lake Erie. Soil conditions favor grape production. Heinemann survived on a brilliant idea by selling unfermented grape juice. He offered a taxi service and of course a tour of the caves.
Heinemann's remains remain in the family to this day. The native grape of South Bass Island is Labrusca, and the main varieties are Concord and Catawba. Specializing in dessert and ice wines, Pink Catawba and Niagara, a medium-sweet white, are favorites. The wines sold at Crystal Caves Gift Shop make a wonderful gift for loved ones back home.
