He drove home to Michigan, stopping overnight in Missouri to find the 33-acre site that now houses a church, museum, and gift shop. According to John - one of Sam's seven children - his father had to work for three years, working 10 hours seven days a week, in what is often referred to as "America's Sistine Chapel".
The church opened in 1989 and, according to his son, has been a place of comfort and inspiration for millions. While he was studying art in college, by his late 30s, Sam was an artist working as an illustrator for his Christian Evangelist magazine, earning $75 a week.
Soon after he began painting Precious Moments for a line of greeting cards with his best friend and business partner at the time, Bill Biel. His work caught the attention of Eugene Friedman, president of Enesco Imports in Chicago, who envisioned Sam's sweet-eyed children in 3D and more.
The rest is cumulative history. "The Precious Moments collection is my father's greatest legacy from a business perspective," says John. "Artistically, I would say Precious Moments Chapel is his greatest legacy." Today, the Precious Moments line includes thousands of designs, some retired and some reinvented.
