JC Penney, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, said it plans to close 242 locations. The company said in its court filing that if its order is approved, it will accept returns within the first 30 days of the date it is approved "so long as the statement to the contrary is consistent with the debtor's return policy in effect from the date such item was purchased."
Returns will not be accepted on items sold in liquidation sales from the company's closing stores. Pier 1 has offered that previously issued valid gift certificates, gift cards and loyalty certificates will be accepted for 21 days after order approval on its website. Gift cards and certificates would then be accepted for the first 21 days "of any store reopening date" for personal purchases only.
After 21 days, they will not be accepted and "are deemed to have no residual value," according to the court filing. It's no secret that COVID-19 has taken a toll on local businesses and national chains. Everything from theaters to shopping malls has been affected as people hunker down, staying at home instead of going out.
