In 1803, Dr. Charles Alexander Warfield patented 510 acres as a "paternal gift" to his son Gustavus. A colonial farmhouse built around 1860. The land was originally owned by Dr. Charles Alexander Warfield, who patented 510 acres to his son Gustavus Warfield. The Harding family of Howard County owned the land until 1937, when Warwick Keegan acquired about 200 acres and the original farmhouse.
Keegan modernized the house, but died soon after, leading to the sale of the land in 1946 to Melvin and Prewskett. Until 1995 the Skeat family continued to use the land to raise cattle, horses, sheep, chickens and crops. Earth was created. Melvin and Prue Shedd's daughter-in-law, Susan Shedd, single-handedly developed what is now the Paternal Gift Farm neighborhood.
He sought to preserve the original agricultural character of the property by keeping 75% of the land under agricultural conservation. The land is used to operate a seven-barn horse boarding facility, which funds the upkeep of the community property. Soon after, a series of crimes began in the ranch, including cutting off the horses' tails.
