Gift Will Make Room For You
Gift Will Make Room For You - Proverbs 18:16 says: "A man's gift gives him a place, and he brings it to the elders." This verse means that we must be faithful to use the gifts that God has given us and that when we use them our faith will be strengthened. However, a closer look at the story reveals a very different lesson. Most of the book of Proverbs contains words that seem to be different. There is usually no common theme in any theme; wisdom seems to jump from one topic to another freely and without context. However, some words are grouped together and should be understood as a coherent unit. Therefore, in order to understand Proverbs 18:16, we must see the main story of verses 15-19. "The heart of the prudent will receive wisdom; and the ear of the wise wants to know. A man's gift gives him a place, and brings him to the elders. He who starts his case will be judged righteous; but his neighbor will come and want him. Lottery has settled disputes, divided between the strong. A wronged brother is better than a strong city; their arguments are like the bars of a fortress." The images of the courtroom are evoked here, and the author is concerned with presenting a picture of justice or its perversion. A wise and intelligent person should seek the truth in a situation, but if you give an illegal gift (or a bribe), it can distort the justice. It goes on to describe an investigation that resolves the controversy stated in the introduction, and such confusion can lead to random selection (casting lots). This can cause serious conflicts between even close friends (relatives), and can destroy a real relationship. So we can see by reading clearly that this is not an encouragement to use our gifts to do good, but a sad commentary on how people can use their gifts or wealth to do evil. Verse 16 describes our gifts as 'making room for us,' clearly indicating a bribe to get what we want. How many times do we see injustice happening in this world because the rich and powerful pay someone to keep them from seeing it? Terrorists, criminals, dictators, and many others have used money and power to force others to do what they want. It is said that every man has a price: when that price is determined, the powerful will gladly pay to protect their interests. Such persecution can also apply to the poor or oppressed. If a poor person is caught by a very powerful creditor, the creditor can ask for additional money on top of the initial "protection" against harm. Such criminals take advantage of the helpless, but the victims have no choice but to pay to protect their lives. It may seem like bribery is the only way to get anything done. However, bribery only distorts justice. Giving a bribe is like saying, "I know I am guilty, but I want to avoid my due punishment." I will give you a gift of something you want if you will help me find what I want. This salary will benefit you, and I will get what I want." Fighting for the truth may seem like defeat. Everywhere we go, people want to sacrifice goodness and justice in order to save their own skins or advance their own agendas. Their gifts make room for themselves by pushing others into darkness. The solution to this problem is personal and collective. Individuals should not succumb to accepting bribes, regardless of the benefits. It may seem small at the time, but we are selling ourselves and showing those in power that we can do it again in the future. When we act, we stop the darkness from weighing us down, and we show that we are choosing to do justice. We must unite together in this effort, and only through our unity will the darkness be defeated. However, this shared belief should not be confined to righteousness alone. It must always look to God as the supreme judge of justice and the source of good and bad. When we yield to God's plan for the universe, true justice must always be a part of that. This means that we separate ourselves from people who only want to line our pockets or give us temporary benefits that are against God's purpose for the oppressed and oppressed. This battle may be difficult, but we must rely on God's strength to endure. Be faithful in prayer and seek strength and comfort in His Word, and we will always be able to withstand the attacks of the enemy. Also, we should be willing to forgive even when we lose heart. Jesus exemplified this with his death on the cross for our sins - taking a punishment he did not deserve, and could have escaped if he had accepted the easy way out. We should follow his example and forgive others even when they don't deserve it. We must also be quick to give grace to those who have abandoned evil and choose to seek the things of God. We are commanded to bear fruit by keeping repentance; when someone does that, we must accept his testimony and accept him as a brother or sister in Christ. This brings love into a broken relationship and can help them see God's true nature of justice and forgiveness.
