But when she solves the last clue, she will be brave enough to accept her brother's gift. She gave - and the love it brought her? The last gift was Emily Stone's second novel, her follow-up to the always heartwarming and heartbreaking December, which I still think about a year later.
So when I was approved to read his new book on special, I was eager to pick it up. While it doesn't quite live up to its predecessor for me, I found a lot to keep me turning the page. Stone's talent lies in creating flawless characters that keep the reader invested.
I like Cassie and Sam. I want them to find happiness, but like I always feel, in December, I'm okay if it means they don't find happiness together. To me, that's a sign that the author did a good job of creating characters that can stand on their own.

But, I know most romance readers will disagree with me. “…Cassie allowed herself to look up, breathing in the cold night air. To imagine that her parents are there, look at her. She usually didn't give in to that—the idea that they were 'out there' somewhere—but tonight, on Christmas Eve, with the stars shining above her, felt like a night to let herself have her imagination."

However, while I loved the characters, there were things about this novel that took me away from the story, which always makes reviewing books very difficult. I think the first 20% of the book is my favorite. Which, yes, is the entirety of the book before the inciting event that becomes the focal point of the novel—the death of Cassie's brother.
But, it's not because of Tom's death or Cassie's heartbreak, it's just because I enjoy the flashbacks that make up the story, while still being the funnest part of the book. Stone is wonderful at writing moments of joy as well as sadness, so it makes sense that she writes about both emotions in her stories, but I'd like to see a book of hers that doesn't use sadness as a plot point.
She's good at making jokes and I want to see more of that. Or maybe it's because Cassie and Tom lost their parents when they were young, so there's a double whammy in this story. While I love Cassie, I would have liked a little more action from her and less new action, if that makes sense.
Cassie is always reacting to her life, reacting to the influence of family and friends, rarely making independent decisions, even in the end. Alternatively, while Sam is not very likable in the beginning, his story is genuine. Raised solely by his mother, Sam struggles with the security status and wealth can provide him, as well as whether or not to have a relationship with his abusive father.
