The most important component of our art is not only that it directly supports the Christian community of the Holy Land, but that it comes directly from the land of the Bible; The birthplace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, where He lived, where He served, where He paid for our sins and where He rose from the dead.
We trust that you will find our products of the highest quality and pray that each item will be a blessing to all who buy, give and receive. The olive tree (Olea europaea) is a noble evergreen tree, born in the warm climate of the Holy Land and the Mediterranean basin.
It is short and squat with many uneven leafy branches decorated with oblong, silver-green leaves. In May the olive trees burst forth, with tiny white flowers that bloom in clusters in front of each leaf, and in October the fruits are picked and the trees are pruned.

Bethlehem olive wood is dense and hard, with a range of colors varying from light cream to a rich golden brown, with an irregular dark brown grain. The whimsical grain of olive wood adds depth and warmth, and the variable and complex nature of the wood can be what makes it one of the most beautiful, unique and attractive natural materials from which to create a wide range of
ecclesiastical artifacts. Green raw olive wood is cut into short branches and trunks. After sealing its ends with wax, it is sorted and stored in a cool warehouse for at least six to twelve months to reduce its high water content (up to 65%) before being cold-dried.
In addition to its water content, olive wood contains a considerable amount of oil and acids that make it very difficult to dry without shrinking or developing cracks. At Holy Land Gift Shop, we pay special attention to this issue, using the latest technology in freeze-drying techniques to ensure well-dried products with a water content as low as 8% to create art as beautiful as it is sacred.
In order to produce high-quality olive wood carvings, several steps must be followed: it is difficult to determine when exactly the tradition of producing memorable religious objects began in Bethlehem, although it is said to be over 400 years ago Franciscan and Roman Orthodox monks taught the locals how to handcraft souvenirs for Christian pilgrims who visited the Holy Land to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.
