At the end of July this year, Meta announced that the price of Meta Quest 2 would increase by $100 / £100. A significant increase that saw the VR title rise to $399/£399 for the 128GB version and $499/£499 for the 256GB version.
But why? Well, according to Meta, this price increase was necessary to combat operational and development costs. Basically, it's the same excuse we've heard from many other products and services like Netflix and Amazon Prime to justify the price increase. This is despite nearly 15 million Meta Quest 2 headsets being sold since launch and over $1 billion spent on apps through the Meta Store.
Why Did The Meta Quest 2 Price Increase?
In April 2021, Facebook announced that it would no longer make the Oculus Rift S and instead focus on the wireless Quest experience. Six months before that, the company also stopped production of the original Oculus Quest. This means that the only VR title in the series available for purchase today is Meta Quest 2.
When production stopped on the original Rift S and Quest, a number of retailers reduced the price of these older units to clear any remaining inventory. . Check today, none of them are in new stock so your only option is to get used for these units.
However, since Meta Quest 2 is the only one with current support - and which costs the same as the outgoing units - we strongly recommend that you use the latest VR title instead. It will be kinder to your wallet and give you a better overall VR experience.

When it was originally known as the Oculus Quest 2, there was an option to buy it with 64GB of storage. This version of the VR title has since been discontinued and now the base model comes with 128GB of storage as standard. Are The Oculus Quest And Oculus Rift S Discontinued?
If you see the 64GB Oculus Quest 2 for sale, ignore it and make sure you get the 128GB Meta Quest 2 because you get more space for games, apps, and files for the money. Yes, there will be a Meta Quest 3, but current estimates suggest that it won't launch until at least 2023.
Meanwhile, another piece of VR hardware has been announced by Meta as being developed under the name Project Cambria. Instead of Meta Quest 3, this seems to be an advanced hybrid of VR and AR that is closely related to Facebook's move to the "metaverse".
