The area includes the famous Union Oyster House restaurant as well as many restaurants that are often full of tourists and college students.
Hidden in one of these streets, perhaps unknown to most of the drunkards stumbling from bar to bar, is a historical marker of important conflicts. Embedded in the foundation of a house at 9 Marshall Street is a circular stone slab about two feet in diameter.

The inscription below the stone reads "Boston Stone 1737." There are no signs or other information that could explain the origin or meaning of the stone. However, legend has it that the stone was brought from England in the 1700s by Thomas Childs, who ran a paint shop on the site.
The children used the stone to grind the pigs for their paints. The children died in 1706 and the stone seems to have disappeared. In 1836, the dye house was demolished to build the current building on the site. During the excavation for the foundation of the new building, the stone was recovered and placed under one of the brick walls of the building.
The significance of the stone's symbolism has been a subject of controversy. Some sources say that the stone marked the center of Boston and was used by local surveyors to measure the distance of the city from the outskirts in the same way that it or the London Stone is said to have been used during the

Rome. This theory contradicts the fact that most mile markers in the region measure Boston's distance from the site of the Old State House, but not from the site of the Boston Stone. Also, there is some evidence to suggest that the sign may have been given the name "Boston Stone" by a Marshall Street merchant in an attempt to increase business in the area by creating a brand identity.

It remains a mystery why the year 1737 was given as the date of the inscription on the stone. Today, the building above Boston Stone houses the Boston Stone Gift Shop. But aside from lending its name to a souvenir shop, the Boston Stone remained largely unknown in the colonial-era town.
