A masu was originally a square box used to measure rice in Japan, and today masu boxes are mostly used for drinking sake. You can get festive with your box, tailoring the colors and patterns of the paper to the holiday or preferences of the gift recipient.

Choose matching papers for the base and lid, or choose two slightly different colors or patterns to add some contrast to the project. Scrapbook paper is preferable for this project because it is quite thick and gives you a sturdy box. Using 12" x 12" scrapbook paper produces a 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" box.
To start the origami gift wrapping, fold a sheet of paper in half horizontally. Open it and then fold it in half vertically. Open to reveal a criss-cross fold pattern. Then fold each corner into the center until your card looks like this template. Fold the top and bottom into the center of the paper as shown here.

Repeat on the other side to complete the box. If you're going to use the box as a heavy gift, attach the flaps with a glue stick or some double-sided tape to reinforce them. Cut the second sheet to measure approximately 11 1/2 inches by 11 1/2 inches.
