To help ease that burden, we've developed the following payment and support programs, as well as extension policies. For more information about these programs, call the Memphis Light, Gas & Water Customer Care Center at (901) 544-6549, visit one of our community offices or click on the links below.
Booklets are also available online for several of these programs. Extended Payment Plan: In some cases, MLGW may set up a payment plan for the outstanding balance in addition to the regular utility bill. Net Due Date Program: If you are retired or on a fixed income and only receive one check at the beginning of each month, you may qualify for this plan.
You can request that the net due date of your invoice be deferred until you receive your check. Vacation Bill Cutoffs: MLGW will postpone default cutoffs to all residential customers between December 15th and January 14th annually. Customers must have an unpaid balance of $399 or less.

The program provides a way for individuals to make a payment on a customer's utility bill as a gift. Donations can go to someone struggling, on a steady income, or for any special occasion. Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, approximately 39,000 households and businesses are behind on their utility payments totaling $30 million.
To pay someone's electricity bill, visit mlgw.com/giftofcomfort. All a donor needs to buy online are the initials of the customer's first name, last name and address number. The customer will receive a letter informing about the Comfort Gift. The donor can remain anonymous or download the Comfort Gift form and mail it to the recipient.
The Comfort Gift program began in 2005. Prior to that, a customer had to mail a check or visit one of MLGW's community offices to make a purchase. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dozens of Whitehaven families got a big surprise when a local company paid their Memphis light, gas and water bills. The utility company announced Monday that Reaves Law Firm wrote a check for $9,217.77 that was used to help pay bills for 29 Whitehaven families.
Gale Jones Carson of MLGW received the law firm's donation through the Comfort Gift program. “It feels like I was chosen by an angel. It brought tears to my eyes. I am so grateful,” said resident Loretta Gilliam. "I am proud to be one of the first companies in Greater Memphis to donate to the Comfort Gift program, especially to benefit Whitehaven residents," said Henry E. Reaves, III.
