At first the children counted the number of presents under the tree and complained about how few there were. The grandparents weren't too keen on the idea either, but they were happy that there wouldn't be any more litter, broken toys or noisy toys for the next month.

But then we started having more meaningful experiences in December, like taking my siblings shopping and doing nice things for our neighbors, and soon those gifts didn't have much of an impact on my kids. Our children look forward to the meaningful experience of being kind and doing good to others more than the gifts they receive.

Each year they get excited about family Christmas traditions and become more creative with new ideas on how to share the Christmas spirit with others. That doesn't mean we stop giving gifts together. We want to put presents under the tree and watch the kids run up the stairs in the morning to unwrap a few presents, but the difference is that there are very few there these days.

We changed our minds about overloading them with gifts as soon as we started the 5 Rules of Christmas Gifts, but last year we added a sixth special gift that we think you'll love too. #6 is a gift for the whole family because we are all about connecting as families and creating family traditions.

At least once a week before we go to bed we play a couple of UN games together as a family, it's amazing. Juliette wrote on her wish list that she wanted to go ice skating with her family. I was no match for the frozen water, but it was still fun and we skated together.

Taylor, my four-year-old daughter, just wanted to go to a restaurant for dinner. Very simple, but it got us out of the house together, talking and having fun. Sometimes as adults we get so caught up in planning all the details of what to do that we forget to ask our children what they want to do.
