I lived in Australia for a while and I decided to get up and travel. I arrived in Indonesia looking for waves with a friend. We mostly lived near the city and went to the beach every day. At one point I needed a bag and went to a street vendor.
I wanted a vegan backpack and I found a backpack with these amazing designs. I took the bag home and people stopped me on the street in America to tell me how much they loved my bag. I am traveling to Sumatra again and working on a documentary series about natural remedies and healing.
One day I stumbled upon the embroidered patterns you see on Banda Bags today. I really had to find out where they came from, so I traveled the countryside and met the women who made such amazing designs. They are amazing artisans who design unique and unique hand embroidered designs and their craftsmanship fascinates me.
Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
Immediately I knew I had to start a collaboration with these ladies who seem to create these designs like magic. My search for these magical and unique designs led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra. If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this was the area hit by the world's worst recorded tsunami.
The earthquake that shook this region shook the earth off its axis, literally. The tsunami that followed devastated the area, killing more than two hundred thousand people. I came after that disaster and a decade after it happened. Looking around, I can imagine that this happened just a week ago.
I can't believe this is where these beautiful embroidered patterns were born. The idea came to me one day that I can bring these unique designs to the world and I can help these women who remain in a situation that has not improved for years.
This remote area has very few opportunities to revitalize its economy, but they have something that I know the world will appreciate. We collaborated to design a vegan and cruelty-free bag that would look great on both the runway and the checkout line. The bag was born this weekend.

A Second Run-In
Shortly after the design weekend, we discovered the Nano. This is a vegan leather bag that really makes a statement. Then we designed a vegan backpack that everyone can carry. The vegan backpack is beautiful and just the right size to carry all your essentials.
The shell bag is a unique design that we came up with because we have never seen anything like it. There is nothing else like it. Our vegan wallets have familiar shapes, but the design is completely Banda. We tinker and play with new ideas all the time, and we want to be one of the most innovative vegan fashion and cruelty-free handbag companies on the planet.
Banda Bags helped increase economic opportunities for those affected by the tsunami. When I started Banda Bags, I made it the foundation of the company to pay fair wages and ensure the safety and well-being of the artisans. I also wanted a sustainable and cruelty-free bag.

The Ravages Of A Tsunami
Now we are looking for all ways to make our bags more sustainable for the environment. This means sourcing materials with a greater amount of recycled content and pursuing production innovations. There are all sorts of cool materials that could one day replace the vegan leather we use today.
We are talking about materials made from all natural sources, including pineapple. We're even finding ways to make poison out of plastic taken from the ocean! I was right in guessing that people love the unique designs I found in Indonesia. From the beginning of working with artisans in their remote village to now, a lot has happened.
