Magnolia Gift & Garden - Banda Aceh is the capital of the Indonesian province of Aceh on the island of Sumatra. It was also the capital of the Sultanate of Aceh since its foundation in the late 15th century. Banda Aceh, at the tip of Sumatra, was a strategic center of transport and trade in the eastern Indian Ocean and was an important trading port between the region, India and Arabia.

About 150,000 people were killed in Banda Aceh in the tsunami of December 26, 2004. Parts of the city were permanently underwater. Many aid agencies have since been present to help rebuild. The long-standing conflict between the Aceh independence movement (GAM) and the Indonesian military (TNI) was for the time being resolved with the peace agreement of 15 August 2005. The peace process has been quite smooth since then.

In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwadi Yusuf, was sworn in. Banda Aceh has a rainforest climate, with nearly constant average temperatures. The average annual temperature in the city is 27°C. However, the city has wetter and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year.

Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season month, where less than 60 mm of rain falls on average. On average, the city receives just under 2,000 mm of rainfall per year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required.

By Bus[Edit]

It is possible to get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents. There are direct night buses, with a journey time of 9 to 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh.

Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a full-size bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide-seat bus. Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but journeys are generally longer.

Prices are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, 1 hour journey, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes journey or Singapore, almost 4 hours.

There is no bus service to the airport anymore. The only way to get to the city area is by taxi from the airport, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi rank is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. The visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates.

By Bus[Edit]

The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. Picks up ships originating from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when originating from Singapore). The Penang Ferry is no longer in operation. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh.

The main means of transport are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibuses). Due to the sudden influx of cash after the tsunami, residents have become accustomed to over-indebtedness, but now stabilization has returned. Examples of becak fares are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000.

Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5,000. Within the city, Rp 10,000 is usually enough. It is possible to take a "Tsunami Tour" as there are still many boats inland and other monuments dedicated to the disastrous day of 2004. There are about 65 NGOs operating in Banda Aceh.

However, they generally do not recruit non-Indonesians locally. These NGOs include various UN and EU agencies, USNS, Care, Americare, Islamic Relief, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Australian Red Cross Society, Turkish Red Crescent Society, Kuwait Red Crescent Society, French Red Cross Society

IMC, IOM, WHO, Japan International Cooperation System, Habitat, Doctors Without Borders, Japan Platform, USAID. At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their licenses were not extended by the Indonesian government.

There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city centre. There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh city. The mall has over 100 stores with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores.

The staple of Aceh's breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere. Padang food stalls and restaurants are open all over the pristine part of town and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some good cafes with relaxing views of the rice paddies around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander in the western suburbs of the city.

In the city center there are three fast food chains, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to make it in this small town. However, there are some points to remember. Although Banda Aceh is today safer than most European cities, it is best not to go out alone after 10pm.
