Cowee Gift Shop
Established in 1969, this gift shop and gem mine is located in the Cowie community of Macon County, just outside of Franklin. Here you can find some of our online products. Place the bucket with extra gems from the natural land mine. Show your love of digging with our t-shirts and stickers.

In the late 1800s, a rich source of rhodolite garnets and six other minerals was discovered in Macon County. The mine was a popular treasure among the county's early settlers, and in 1965, when Tom Johnson was six months old, his father bought the mine.
Today, the mine is still owned by the Tom family and his wife, Ginger, who continue the family's mining legacy and now own the Cowee Gift Shop and Mason Mountain Mine. A site for families and miners from around the world to Macon County still searching for gems.

In addition to Rhodolite Garnet, the Rhododendron that grows along the mountains, there are six other minerals at the site - Corundum, which is Ruby and Sapphire, Kyanite, Moonstone, Smoky Quartz, Garnet and Cordierite (a form of Iolite). From a private mining site located on top of Mason Mountain, local mud is pumped to this pile to pass through the miners. Soil samples from the site reveal a variety of minerals including Rhodolite Garnet, Ruby, Sapphire, Kyanite, Moonstone, Cordierite and Smoky Quartz. Our experienced staff will guide you in finding the original material.
There is a gem chart to help you identify your findings. Place the stain on a screen and rinse thoroughly. Focus on smooth, heavy and colorful materials. Our staff will assist you from the beginning until you get to know the original document. In order to find gems, miners can purchase enhanced plates that have gems mixed with natural soil.
This will ensure the discovery of additional minerals. Many of our miners love these buckets! For our favorite stones, we offer brackets ranging from $500.00 to $1500.00. These plates say "Rock Your World". After drilling in the pipeline, bring the findings to the gift shop for identification by the shop staff.
The staff chooses the profits that are cut and made into jewelry. We provide cutting and making of jewelery for our clients. Our turnaround time is 3-8 weeks depending on the season. Can't work during the season? Don't worry, we ship dirt all over the US.
