While gift cards are often accepted after a business files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in many cases they quickly become worthless. “I usually tell people if they have gift cards in their wallet, use them yesterday,” Melissa Jacoby, a professor of bankruptcy law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told USA Today. A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults have left at least one gift card to expire, 27% have lost at least one card, 21% have lost one because the company is permanently going out of business, and are using at least one card.
It is important to visit the physical retailer or card location and make sure you are in the correct location before entering any information. If you are not careful, you may end up with a website that looks legitimate but can steal your gift card balance, rendering it useless.
USA TODAY has rounded up the most popular store, restaurant, and gift card credit card sites for you to check out. This list is valid through December 24th. Another way to check balances is with store apps, and some retailers like Target even let you add gift cards to app wallets.

Amazon says you can view your gift card balance on your account. Also when you apply a Gift Card to an order or add a Card to Your Account for a future purchase, the balance will be saved. After visiting your account, select Gift Cards and view the balance on your gift card.
According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to receive a V-Bucks card code. Cards can be obtained at epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. According to Oculus, if you receive store credit, you can check the balance from your settings in the Oculus app. You will need to add a payment method to your account before you can use the credit.
