LifeSouth Community Blood Centers kicked off its Spring Up and Donate Blood Drive Thursday, during which donors will receive a $25 e-gift card. According to the organization's press release, the blood test is being conducted till Sunday, April 16.

Those who donate blood during the drive receive a $25 e-gift card that can be used at hundreds of major retailers and restaurants. Double red blood cell or platelet donors receive an additional $20 e-gift card. Life South distributes blood to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, North Fulton Hospital, Habersham Medical Center, Spalding Regional Medical Center and Sylvan Grove Hospital.

Blood donors receive refreshments and a short physical including cholesterol, iron levels, temperature and blood pressure. Life is open at Southeast. Life South Community Blood Center is asking for donations of all blood types to ensure local hospitals have the blood supply needed to help patients suffering from trauma, cancer and chronic diseases. The organization reports that during the summer months, blood donations are less frequent as people travel.

Life South also stated that donations are less this year. To increase donation participation, Life South will issue a $20 e-gift card and a "special identification item" to all blood donors Friday through Monday. Those who donate platelets, plasma or red blood cells receive an additional $20 e-gift card.

Donors also receive a mini physical on site that includes blood pressure, iron levels and cholesterol screening. Donors must be at least 17 or 16 years old with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is required.

"We need it so bad, there are so few of those hospitals," Palmer said.

Life South is offering rewards to those who come out and donate blood to help local hospitals.
