Philip Van Doren Stern was a brilliant Civil War historian and author, but perhaps his most enduring work is this little story about a man who is transformed by a visit from an angel who, fulfilling the man's wish never to be born, It shows what it would mean to your city and your loved ones.
Stern wrote some 4,000 words of the story, which he kept revising until 1943, when he attempted to publish it. Despite his established reputation as an author, he was unable to find a publisher for the story, so in December 1943 he printed some 200 copies and sent them to his friends as 21-page Christmas cards.

A few months later, one of Stern's pamphlets caught the attention of Cary Grant, who saw it as a film starring himself. Stern sold the rights to the film for $10,000, and after some false starts, the film was produced by Frank Capra in 1946 under the title It's a Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.

David McKay Stern published the story in 1944 after the film rights had been sold, but before the film was made. This is a beautiful copy of the first print. Fine in almost thin dust jacket. Small scuffs to lower the front corners of the boards.
The jacket has a small closed tear at the end of the spine and the spine is lightly tan, extending about 1/2" into the back panel. A very clean and shiny ensemble.
