By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners do not need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa-on-arrival can be obtained at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this usually only applies to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop buses, with a travel time of 9-13 hours - from Maidan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices at Jl. Gajah mada, plain. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a standard size bus to Rp 200,000 in a giant bus.
Small buses can also take you from Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journey is long. Prices are lower than trainers. It is also possible to travel from Maidan to Banda Aceh via Kutaken and Takengon. Total 20 hours. There are daily flights between Banda Aceh and Maidan, a 1-hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-hour-40-minute journey, or Singapore, approximately 4 hours.
There are no buses running at the airport anymore. The way to the city is by plane, which is set at Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi rank is immediately to the left as you exit the arrival gate. Visa requirements at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates.
By Bus[Edit]
The nearest major (international) ferry port is Belawan Port, near Maidan. We ship from Batam, Indonesia (usual route when coming from Singapore). The ferry from Penang is no longer operational. From Bandar Aceh's Bandar Ulhi-Li you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transport are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (minibus).
The sudden influx of money after the tsunami had made the townspeople used to paying high prices, but now there is relief. Sample Back Price: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5,000. In the city, it usually costs Rp 10,000.

It is possible to go on a "tsunami tour" as there are many boats on shore and other memorials dedicated to the fateful day of 2004. About 65 NGOs operate in Banda Aceh; However, they usually cannot find non-Indonesians in the area. There are also small shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace Shopping Center is located in the city of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores including food stores, supermarkets and clothing stores. Acehnese breakfast food is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold at coffee shops everywhere.
Food stalls and padang restaurants are open all over the city, and fruit carts are everywhere. Along JL Tengku Iskandar in the western part of the city, there are good coffee shops and rice paddy views around Uli Kareng. Three fast food restaurants can be found in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
As a casual traveler with a good attitude you need to enjoy your stay in this small town. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer these days than most European cities, it's still best not to go out alone after 22:00.

Because Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations based on local interpretations of Sharia law may result in arrest by the Sharia police and corporal punishment and public humiliation for the offending Muslim.
