Although gift cards are accepted after a company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, they are generally ineffective. Sometimes there is little or no warning before a business closes. "I usually tell people if they have a gift card in their wallet, use it yesterday," Melissa Jacoby, a financial law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, previously told USA TODAY.

If you're not careful, you could end up visiting a website that looks legitimate but could steal your gift card balance, rendering it useless. USA TODAY has rounded up places to check out for popular stores, restaurants and credit card companies. This list is valid as of December 24th.
Another way to check balances is through store apps, and some retailers like Target let you add gift cards to app accounts. Amazon says you can view your gift card balance in your account. When you apply a gift card to an order or add it to "My Account" for future purchases, the balance will be saved.
Check Gift Card Balances (Carefully)
After going to your account, select "Gift Cards" and check your gift card balance. According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to redeem the V-Bucks Card code. Cards can be redeemed at Epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. According to Oculus, when you receive store credit, you can check your balance in the Oculus app settings.
