I have been connected with Idalki for almost a month now. I spent countless hours scrolling through the Italki app, choosing my teachers, and taking lessons via Skype.

Italki Gift Card
During this time, I learned some tips and tricks to find the best value for money at Italki. In this Italki review, I'll share everything you need to know about Italki - how Italki works, how much it costs, its pros and cons, is it safe, and more.
Idalki is a platform that connects language learners and teachers. It has over 10,000 teachers and over 5 million students and claims to offer basically "every language" including English, Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Italian, Russian, Tagalog, Thai and Turkish. At Italki, teachers and students meet for 1-on-1 lessons via video calls, usually Skype.
Most Italki tutors focus on helping you develop conversational skills through speaking. (This is called Italki). However, you can also find Italki tutors who can provide you with personalized lessons as per your needs. Personally, I used Italki to learn French. In addition to improving my French fluency, Italki allowed me to connect with people from all over the world.
How Does Italki Work?
I often tell my Italki teachers that for me, Italki is a form of traveling the world without leaving the comforts of home. I will share my Italki experience in a little while! The first step to getting started is of course signing up. I highly recommend downloading Italki app which is user friendly and feature packed.

Now, you are ready to find a language teacher and book your lessons. For this, make good use of the available filters. Also, you will see a video of the teacher's introduction, the types of lessons he/she offers, and comments written by students. The most important difference in Italki is between community tutors and professional tutors.
As you might imagine, professional teachers are trained as teachers and/or have extensive teaching experience. They go through a vetting process through Italki. They are generally better equipped to provide structured Italki lessons with materials and resources. However, they are more expensive, paying at least $8/hour compared to the $4/hour charged by community tutors.
Personally, I find professional tutors no better than community tutors on Italki. You can find the best community tutors who can provide the best quality lessons according to your goals. In fact, I found some who had experience and teaching materials, but were not listed as professional teachers.
Community Tutors Vs. Professional Teachers
In the profile of your chosen Italki teacher, you will find the types of lessons offered. Above, you'll see a screenshot I took of my teacher's profile. She offers individual French lessons and preparation classes for the DELF exam. You can find many interesting lessons in Italki.
I saw things like this: Lessons in Italki usually last 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. Sometimes, you can get discounts for booking a package. Before committing to a set of lessons, I advise you to review the teacher's calendar and make sure that he/she has a schedule that matches yours and that he/she is not so popular that the calendar is booked for the following week.

Is it free? No not this. Italian teachers set their own fees. The lowest price is $4 and the highest price is $80. You can use the filters to find a tutor that fits your budget, whether it's $10/hour or $50/hour. Personally, I look for teachers on the lower end of the budget spectrum.
I usually spend about $8/hour for an hour of speaking and $12/hour for lessons. Note that as a new Italki user, you can get 30-minute trial lessons at a special rate. I had trials for just $2! Take advantage of this. To make your purchase, you can pay each time you book a lesson or buy Italki credits that you can use to reduce the cost of each lesson.
Community Tutors Vs. Professional Teachers
I choose the latter for convenience. Whew… If you're looking for Italki coupons and promo codes, I've been there and done that. I'm sorry to say that most of the Italki promo codes you find online don't work. I've done several conversation classes where you start with an introduction and then the topics flow into each other.
If the teacher calms me down, the class will pass. If you like this teaching style, that's great. Personally, I like to let teachers know that I want to be corrected when I make a mistake while speaking, because not all teachers are happy to interrupt you.
There are also teachers who are more focused and structured. They will offer options on how to proceed with the lesson and you can discuss your goals with them. I have a tutor with whom I develop structured Italic lessons, supported by a grammar book.

She goes through the grammar rules at the beginning of the chapter and then we do the exercises together. I love having a personal tutor like this! Ultimately, you need to know what you want to achieve and your preferred learning style. While you're still new to Italki, take full advantage of the trial lessons and switch from teacher to teacher.
Lessons & Scheduling
You will find a spectrum of teaching styles. Stay with the ones you love. I've made it my personal mission to find the best Italki tutors without breaking the bank. While researching, I discovered how you can assess potential tutors' ability. Of course, the first thing you should check is the reviews.
However, it's common for many students to be reluctant to give bad reviews (I'm one of them!), and it's hard for you to really tell them. So, what you should really check is the ratio between the number of students the teacher has and the number of lessons taught by the teacher.
In the above figure, 1 student takes an average of 2 lessons from the teacher on the left while 1 student takes an average of 9.5 lessons from the teacher on the right. Who is the best teacher? Easy to say. When using the filters to narrow your search for the perfect Italki teacher, you can tick "native speakers" without thinking.
At first I did too. Then I changed my mind. I've learned that if I'm looking for someone to teach me a language, a non-native speaker is better than a native speaker. A non-native speaker has walked you through the journey, sitting in classrooms to learn the language from A to Z.
