And industry observers say the company has a long way to go in terms of user experience. That's because it seems important to acquire a company like Amazon. Based in Boston but owned by China's PDD Holdings, Temu (pronounced teemu) launched in the US last September.
It beat out TikTok, Amazon, and Instagram as the top free apps in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Just like Amazon, its website and app sell a wide variety of items, from fast fashion and makeup to electronics, housewares and popsicle sticks.
It operates solely as a marketplace where merchants located primarily in China sell products to customers in the United States and Canada. So what do we know about the company and how do we keep the prices so low? Temu made headlines in February with a Super Bowl ad in which a woman easily purchases various items from the Temu app on her phone.

The slogan "Shop Like a Billionaire" suggested that shoppers could buy whatever they wanted without worrying about the cost. "The idea is that you can continue to use your credit card as your budget allows," Michael Felice, a partner in the telecommunications, media and technology practice at consulting firm Kearney, told Insider.

From the home page of Temu's website, it is clear that the main focus is on price. The graphics advertise the site's various promotions, with full prices and percentage discounts displayed next to each item. This is often discounted up to 80%. A Temu spokesperson would not confirm how those percentages are calculated.
There aren't many popular western brands that you can shop at Temu. For example, no results are returned for Adidas, Apple, or Urban Decay. However, a search for the latter shows listings of eyeshadow palettes similar to the popular Naked palette. There are other examples of obvious hits.
If you search for Victoria's Secret's pink brand, the list will show a number of bags labeled "pink" with no mention of the American brand. Similar styles are also available on Alibaba and Amazon. There are also a number of the brand's bags under $20, similar to Herschel's black bags, which sell for $9.79, compared to $110 for a similar bag on Herschel's own site, and Marc Jacobs sells for as much as $595.

Victoria's Secret, Herschel and Marc Jacobs did not respond to requests for comment on whether they were aware of the listings or whether they intended to remove them. Temu said it has a strict policy against any listings that violate third-party intellectual property rights and will remove anything that violates them.
Temu has 4.6 stars in both the Apple and Google app stores. Temu says its "next-generation manufacturing model," sharing data about what consumers buy and search on the site with third-party merchants, helps keep prices low. This allows retailers to better predict trends and plan production, reducing the risk of overproduction of products consumers don't want.

These savings can be passed on to consumers, a Temu spokesperson told Insider. But experts say there are other factors contributing to the low price. Most vendors are based in China, where production and labor costs are low, and the producer-to-consumer business model means there are no profit-making middlemen in the chain.
Temu also provides free tools for sellers, such as access to a photo studio, to ensure that site content is aesthetically similar. "Temu is exposed to a market where the brand has been producing at a very low cost, but there are too many incremental costs in the value chain," Felice said.
What Brands Does Temu Sell?
In other words, most manufacturers sell their products through several layers of middlemen, each of whom wants their cut, incurring additional costs until the product is delivered to the consumer. With Temu, mediators are taken out of the process. But for the average North American shopper, these low prices can actually be disconcerting.
Especially if they don't know much about Temu. "There's a level of trust with a site like Amazon," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, told Insider, and the fact that so many products are shipped from China to the US "automatically raises doubts about authenticity."
Saunders said. Some Twitter users expressed concern that the site might be a "scam," according to OneCuteCouponer accounts. Showing shoppers how to use coupons and get the best deals online, YouTuber Erica Miller, who runs TEMU, said she first heard about temu when she was 16.

year-old niece, who "instantly thought it was a scam." "I'm a bargain shopper, but I'm not sure yet," Teemu contacted Miller, later known for his discount retail records, to create a sponsored video. Miller was given up to $140 to spend on Temu, and he was paid to post a video reviewing his purchases.
Cutting Out The Middleman Saves Costs
He ordered a number of products, including clothing, kitchen tools and an LED clock, and said he was impressed with the quality of the items. using Temu and getting all these discounts, it all depends. Insider reporter Dani Santana was also skeptical, and the site recently listed four products, including a charging cable and a portable electric blender.
He tested his purchases by ordering. He concluded that Temu was not a scam, but that the product he ordered was of poor quality because everything he ordered turned up. A buyer left a review with the Better Business Bureau. website. You get what you pay for.
Another buyer said. The company currently has a rating of 2.09 out of 5 stars on the BBB. Although there are positive reviews, the rating has decreased slightly since the beginning of the month. However, there is a new caveat that most of the products are shipped from China.
Other reviews on the BBB website say consumers are unhappy with Temu's long shipping times and the high volume of marketing emails they receive after ordering, Insider's Santana said in her Temu review. We shared a similar complaint. Temu says customers will have to wait 7 to 15 business days for shipping since most items ship from China, but note that it's mostly free, plus express shipping adds $12.90 to the order.
