But when consumers use plastic cards or digital codes is another matter. According to a July Bankrate.com survey, 51% of U.S. adults have unused gift cards, vouchers and store credit. This adds up to an average of $116 per person in gift cards. Is it legal for a gift card?
Use it before it's gone. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using the card as soon as possible. It advises treating gift cards like cash and redeeming them early to get full value. Another good reason to use cards sooner rather than later: the possibility of a merchant or restaurant going out of business.
Use Your Christmas Gift Cards Asap
While gift cards are often accepted after a business files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in most cases they quickly become worthless. Sometimes there is little or no warning before a business closes. "I usually tell people if they have gift cards in their wallet, use them yesterday," Melissa Jacobs, a law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, previously told USA Today.

A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults let at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one, and 21% lost at least one card because a business closed permanently before using it. It's important to make sure you're in the right place before going to the original merchant or card's website and entering any information.
If you're not careful, you can access a website that looks legitimate, but steals your gift card balance and renders it useless. USA TODAY rounded up the sites to review the most popular store, restaurant and credit card gift cards. This list is available from December.

If you use a gift card on an order or add it to "Your Account" for a future purchase, the balance will be saved.

Cards can be redeemed at epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. According to Oculus, if you receive store credit you can check your balance from your settings in the Oculus app.

To redeem the card in your account, log in to the browser, go to the "Gift Card Redemption Page" and enter the PIN on the card. You will then choose to spend to add credit to your account. One way to check for cards is to add gift cards to your Starbucks app or go to Starbucks.com/gift.

Note that the card can only be used at a store or at a specific location. Fees: Some state laws bar service fees and expiration dates on store gift cards, but the rules on cards named after the credit card company are stricter. These cards cannot expire for at least five years and service charges cannot be deducted if they are not used within 12 months.
Bonus Cards: It's gift card promotional season, when select restaurants and stores offer bonuses on gift card purchases. When you receive a bonus gift card, sometimes called bonus bucks, many of them expire. Check the terms. Protect your card: Some gift cards can be registered as credit cards on card listing websites to protect them from theft or loss.
