They will talk about endless walks through orange groves, visits to buffalo farms and deer parks, lazy days at the beach and family trips to Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland. Although it wasn't that long ago that the county had grown so fast when I came around that I couldn't even picture the pictures they described.

Many of the places they visited are long gone but there are a few that hang on and, recently, I was lucky enough to visit Knott's Berry Farm Independence Hall in Bayona Park. Located just across the street from Nutt's Berry Farm, Independence Hall is an exact replica of the Philadelphia original.

Designed by Walter Knott, it opened in 1966 as an extension of his popular theme park and he considered its construction one of his greatest achievements. When I was a kid, Independence Hall loomed large over busy Beach Blvd. But now it's partially hidden by a large fire and the nearby Soak City Water Park hides it.

Those driving past might think it's private property or long abandoned, but in fact, it's open to the public free of charge every day. Just park across the street in the Knott's Lot (1 hour is free), take the tunnel down to Beach Blvd. And suddenly you find yourself back in the colonial era.

Knowing about it for years, you'd think I'd visit a long time ago but I have to admit this week was my first time. My mom and I met for lunch and decided to check it out. On a quiet weekday we were the only visitors apart from a family of Muscovy ducks.

We walked in and were greeted by a friendly Nuts employee who showed us around. The foyer is dominated by an antique carriage that Walter and Cordelia brought back from a trip to France. This is the biggest monument I have ever seen! Nearby is a replica of the Assembly Chamber where the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were signed.

Usually, there is an audio presentation, but, unfortunately, on the day of our visit they had technical difficulties and we were left to imagine what the founding fathers spoke about these important dates. Another highlight of the hall is a replica of the Liberty Bell - chicken and all!

I was very moved by this quote and I have to admit that seeing it gave me a sense of patriotism that I don't often feel. The entire structure is filled with patriotic artifacts from authentic colonial documents to exciting recreational activities. There is also a wonderful gift shop with lots of fun things to take home.

The Betsy Ross and George Washington waxes reminded me of my favorite Movieland wax museum that used to live down the road. I still remember. Some consider Knott's Berry Farm Independence Hall to be a quaint relic of a bygone era, but I don't think so.

I love the road attractions and the nostalgic setting but this place is more than that. It reminds us of our country's origins and all it took to make America what we know today, for better or worse. It's not easy for anyone to get to Philadelphia to see the real thing - I know I've never done it.

For us on the west coast this is a rare glimpse into our colonial past and I wish it was more appreciated. Amazing I never knew this was across the street! My 5th grade class took a field trip to Nutt's Berry Farm and Independence Hall, circa 1977.

Nice to know that this wonderful historical replica is still standing and educating/inspiring the public. Thanks for sharing your adventures! This website uses Akismet to reduce spam.
