Frequently Asked Questions Whole Body Donation
In Pennsylvania, all donations must be made to the Pennsylvania Gift to Humanity Registry. We cannot accept donations directly to PCOM. If you would like your body to benefit from PCM's Human Anatomy Program, please submit your request to the Gift of Humanity Registry. When filling out the donor registration form, please write: "I would like to designate the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine as this gift."
Donations may remain in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Oh yes. The need for physical donations is huge and will increase the demand for more doctors, dentists, nurses and other health professionals. HGR pays $100 to transport a body from death, by a licensed funeral director, to a medical training facility. Your relatives or your places will be responsible for the remaining cost of transportation. This is! PCOM will cover the costs associated with embalming, transportation and cremation at Ivy Hill Cemetery.

The ashes of a loved one can be returned to the family after graduation if arrangements are made at the time of donation with the Humanity Gift Registry. Anatomical studies take two years to complete. The cremation will take place within a month after the completion of the anatomical studies.
Please note, due to the COVID pandemic, these deadlines may be extended by one year. After the studies are over, the remains will be taken to Ivy Hill Cemetery where they will be cremated and the ashes will be buried in a designated cemetery in Philadelphia.
If the family wishes to have the ashes returned for private burial, proper arrangements must be made through the Humanity Gifts Registry. The family must inform HGR that they wish to receive the ashes after the study. PCOM will notify HGR if ashes are available to be returned to the family.
The Registry will notify the next of kin in writing. There are two ways PCOM can return the remains: When the ashes are returned, they arrive in a rectangular plastic urn. You will also receive two burial certificates, which will be sent to the burial ground if needed in this way.

There is also a Celebration of Record, which Humanity holds once a year Registry of donations. Family and friends are invited to this event to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. The students who benefited from these donations will also attend and participate in the ceremony.
