Smoke often comes from the four towers, and the harder Calcifer works, the more smoke is emitted. Apparently it was made of coal. The interior of the castle is not at all what you would expect. For that is but neither. When we enter the castle through the magic gate, we are actually entering the house where Calcifer is.
At first it was a small hut in Porthaven, although he moved home to a hat shop in Chipping Market. It consists of a few rooms over two floors, a hallway with a fireplace, and an entrance to a small courtyard where Ulula creates many of her magical things.
However, there are two windows that do not connect to the Porthaven/Fori detached house. There is one small window above the door which Calcifer uses to see where the castle is running, and another is in Ulula's room, which overlooks her sister's garden in Wales to look after her niece and nephew Ingaria.

In the film, the house and castle appear to be convertible, with some doors and windows opening into the castle, others into Porthaven (or after the move, Chipping Market). This may refer to the windows in the original novel, which were open to areas other than Porthaven/Market Chipping.

The fortress in the film is very different, as it is depicted as a mix of houses, mechanics and even artillery stations, forming what appears to be a walking, mechanical creature with chicken legs and a giant, frog-face. The smoke tower keeps four. Grandmother Sophia, seeing the castle in ruins for the first time, comments on its ugliness.
As mentioned, Ulula has a moving castle. Driven and directed by Calcifer, he climbs the slopes around Chipping market, sometimes even in the high deserts. How it moves is never described in detail in the books (although the cover of one edition of the castle is made of legs and bricks too).
In the film, the castle itself is shown to have short, spiky feet on which it walks. But what makes Castle Ululate really moving is the unique front door. There is a small clock near the door, which the door leads to when it opens from the color of the clock.
