they are present in their fullness in Jesus Christ, but they are also found in all Christians who are in a state of grace. We receive it when we are imbued with sanctifying grace, with the life of God in us - as, for example, when we receive the sacrament worthily.
First we receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of baptism; These gifts are confirmed in Confirmation, which is one reason why the Catholic Church teaches that Confirmation is best understood as the completion of baptism. As the current Catechism of the Catholic Church notes (para. 1831), the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit "complement and perfect the virtues of those who receive them."

Through wisdom, we come to a correct evaluation of the things we believe in through faith. The truths of the Christian faith are more important than the things of this world, and wisdom helps us to properly manage our relationship with creation, loving Creation for God's sake and not for itself.

Understanding is the second gift of the Holy Spirit and sometimes it is difficult for people to understand (no pun intended) how it is different from wisdom. While wisdom is the will to consider the things of God, understanding allows us to understand, at least in a limited way, the core truths of the Catholic faith.
Through understanding, we gain certainty about our beliefs that go beyond faith. Counsel, the third gift of the Holy Spirit, is the perfection of the cardinal virtue of prudence. Caution can be practiced by anyone, but advice is supernatural. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we can intuitively judge the best way to act.
Because of the gift of counsel, Christians need not be afraid to defend themselves for the truths of their faith, because the Holy Spirit will guide us in defending those truths. While counsel is the consummation of a cardinal virtue, constancy is both a gift of the Holy Spirit and a cardinal virtue.
The Kinds Of Gifts
Fortitude is classed as the fourth gift of the Holy Ghost because it gives us strength to follow the actions suggested by the gift of counsel. Although courage is sometimes called bravery, it goes beyond what we usually think of as bravery. Fortitude is the virtue of the martyrs that allowed them to suffer death rather than renounce the Christian faith.
The fifth gift of the Holy Spirit, knowledge, is often confused with wisdom and understanding. Like wisdom, knowledge is the perfection of faith, but while wisdom gives us the desire to judge all things according to the truths of the Catholic faith, knowledge is the actual ability to do so.

Like advice, it is directed at our actions in this life. In a limited way, knowledge allows us to see our life circumstances as God sees them. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit we can determine God's purpose for our lives and live it accordingly.
Piety, the sixth gift of the Holy Spirit, is the perfection of religious virtue. Although nowadays we tend to think of religion as an external element of our faith, it actually means a willingness to worship and serve God. Godliness takes this willingness beyond duty, so that we will worship and serve God out of love, as we would honor our parents and do what they want.
Our Body Is Like The Body Of Christ
The seventh and final gift of the Holy Spirit is the fear of God, and perhaps no other gift of the Holy Spirit is misunderstood. We think of fear and hope as opposites, but the fear of God underscores the theological value of hope. This gift of the Holy Spirit gives us the desire not to offend God, as well as the assurance that God will give us the graces we need not to offend Him.
Our desire not to offend God is more than a duty; like piety, the fear of God springs from love. 38 Then Peter said to them: Repent and be baptized each of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
