Rule of thumb with gift cards? Use it before it's gone. The Federal Trade Commission recommends that you use your card as soon as possible. He also recommends treating gift cards like cash and redeeming them early to get the full value. Another good reason to use your card as soon as possible: the risk of a merchant or restaurant going out of business.
Use Your Christmas Gift Cards Asap
Although gift cards are often accepted after a business files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in many cases the gift cards quickly become worthless. Sometimes there is little or no warning before a business closes. "I generally tell people if they have a gift card in their wallet, use it yesterday," Melissa Jacoby, a bankruptcy law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, previously told USA TODAY.
A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults let at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one, and 21% lost it because a business closed permanently before using at least one card. It is important to go to the card seller or website and confirm that you are in the right place before entering any information.
If you're not careful, you can go to a website that looks legitimate, but it can steal your gift card balance, rendering it useless. USA TODAY has rounded up the sites to check out the most popular stores, restaurants and credit card gift cards. This list is current as of December 24.
Another way to check your balance is with the store app, and some retailers like Target let you add gift cards to your app wallet. Amazon says you can see the gift card balance in your account. Also when you apply a gift card to an order or add it to your "Account" for future purchases, the balance will be saved.
Check Gift Card Balances (Carefully)
After you go to your account, select "gift cards" and view the balance on the gift card. According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to redeem V-Bucks Card codes. Cards can be redeemed at Epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. According to Oculus, if you receive store credit, you can check your balance from your settings in the Oculus app.
