As a result of the tsunami on December 26, 2004, about 150,000 people died in Banda Aceh. Parts of the city were permanently flooded. Many relief agencies have since helped rebuild. By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa. A 30-day visa on arrival can be obtained at Banda Aceh Airport. The consulate in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes issue a visa on the same day if you complete all the documents before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses, the travel time is 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gaja Mata, Medan. The price ranges from 110,000 rupiah for a bus with regular seats to 200,000 rupiah for a bus with wide seats.
Minibuses can take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journeys usually take longer. The price is slightly lower than that of buses. From Medan, you can go to Banda Aceh via Kutakan and Degon. In total, it will be 20 hours.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour journey, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes, or Singapore, almost 4 hours. There are no more buses to the airport. The only way into the city area is by taxi to the airport, which costs 100,000 rupiah (2019).

The taxi rank is on the left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Pelawan Port, near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route from Singapore).
The ferry will not operate from Penang. From Ulhi Lee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Wei and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transportation are pechak (motoxy) and labi-labi (minibus). The post-tsunami cash flow forced locals to get used to high fees, but stability has now returned.

At the height of the tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.
There are also several small souvenir shops selling various local products. Hermès Palace Mall is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores, including a food court, a supermarket and clothing stores. The breakfast staple in Aachen is nasi kuri, rice cooked in coconut milk, which is sold in all coffee shops.
Food stalls and padang restaurants are open throughout the unspoilt part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some good coffee shops around Ulee Kareng and JL Tengu Iskandar on the western edge of town with nice views of the rice paddies. In the center there are three fast food chain restaurants A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
