The connection between poverty and shame is evident in the opening chapter as Della sadly counts her savings. She shamefully noted that sixty cents and seventy cents of the dollar she saved were recorded as pennies because the penny was the lowest amount. She describes the embarrassment she feels when debating grocery prices, explaining that her cheeks burn during these interactions.
Her efforts to provide more rations are a clear sign that her community is struggling financially. Della and Jim's broken house is full of furniture, the mailbox is too small and the electric bell is broken, highlighting their poverty. The couple don't even have any belongings in their house, and their few personal possessions are yarn, so Della, realizing she can't give Jim a present, has nothing to sell except her hair.
Something Went Wrong
The fact that Jim made a lot of money when he first moved into the apartment reinforces the couple's self-awareness about their current situation. Jim's full name "James Dillingham Young" on the letterbox is now a common symbol of their lost wealth and shame. These signs of material poverty are juxtaposed with the abundance of love between the pair to show that what they lack in material wealth they make up for in love.
Any shame they feel is outweighed by their desire to please the other. Della and Jim's love for each other is evident throughout the story through small and large acts of generosity. Della pinches a penny to save for a gift, even though rape is shameful.

Although her hair is very important to her, Della sacrifices to buy Jim a precious gift. Likewise, Jim doesn't go out in winter with gloves and a new coat. He is very proud of his watch as it is a family heirloom, but sells it to give Della a gift she could not otherwise afford.
Both Della and Jim put aside their pride by selling their personal possessions to buy lavish gifts for the other. The self-sacrifice required of each of them to make such enormous sacrifices comes from a place of deep love. Rather than resenting these sacrifices, both Jim and Della willingly make them because they share a sense of generosity.
The Interconnectedness Of Poverty And Shame
Della's generosity is evident after the haircut as she is excited to bring Jim a gift and is excited to receive the platinum necklace and can't wait to present his gift to him. When Jim finds out that the turtle combs he bought Della are useless, he doesn't get angry and tells her that not doing anything to her hair might affect his feelings for her.
His reaction to the now useless platinum necklace also highlights his love for Della. He laughs at the strangeness of the situation and explains that he sold the watch. This reveals their independence and reinforces their strong bond. Exposure to Henry Della's actions can be seen as both foolish and wise.
On a surface level, Della's sudden decision to cut her hair represents her emotions. The words she uses as she leaves the house represent a quick step, taking off her coat and skirt and waving as she walks out the door. The hair salon scene continues its tone of frustration as she climbs the stairs, pulls up her pants, and breathlessly asks if Madame Sophrony will buy her hair.

Della's disregard for Madame Sophroni's cruel response to the highly emotional request suggests that Della is about to break. The audio continues as Della spends the next two hours searching for Jim's gift. Della once again makes a foolish financial decision when she spends all the money from selling her hair and most of her savings on a platinum watch chain.
The Interconnectedness Of Poverty And Shame
However, the central motivation for Della's depression is love, which poses the moral question of whether love is foolish or wise. In the final paragraph of the story, the narrator offers the answer to this moral question by directly comparing Della and Jim to the magic, or wise men, from the story of Jesus' birth.
The narrator acknowledges that the comb necklace and watch are now useless, but declares that the true gift Jim and Della give each other is love, the greatest gift of all. The story ends by saying that this act makes Jim and Della the wisest of the gift-givers.
