But after the carelessness of life on the street where he lived, I recently realized that Southeast Washington was actually safer than Ukraine or Sudan.

They have the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network's mobile command center to quickly process gunnery information.
And a joint operations command center that can operate hundreds, if not thousands, of closed-circuit TV cameras throughout the city. Yet the homicide rate continues to rise — 96 percent of perpetrators and victims are black men between the ages of 18 and 34, in a city where black people make up just 46 percent of the population.

October is a busy month for the Julie Rogers Gift of Life Program, a nonprofit organization in Beaumont. The organization helps hundreds of people every year.
