Nowadays, some banks are throwing money at new customers to get a rewards credit card with a huge introductory bonus on top of the regular ongoing rewards. So why keep accepting a card that doesn't give you anything back? Those points convert to either $1,000 in travel when used through Chase's travel program or can be exchanged for equivalent airline points schemes. Even after you get that new customer bonus, you can continue to earn a healthy number of points to spend that can add up to thousands over the years if you use it right.

Recent figures released by the American Bankers Association (opens in new tab) show that more than half of Americans with credit cards carry a balance each month, meaning they don't pay it off in full and therefore pay interest. If you can't pay off your credit card in full, a rewards credit card isn't right for you.
It's better to use a balance transfer credit card so you can move from a high interest card to a 0% interest card. There's little point in a rewards credit card in that situation, because over time, the interest will erode any reward benefit. But if you can or will pay off your card in full each month, a rewards credit card is a no-brainer because you're effectively getting paid to spend.

You can choose between a cashback credit card that pays money into your account or one that gives you points or vouchers. I should add that a rewards card is not an excuse to spend on things you can't afford or don't need just to get the reward, otherwise it's a false economy.
Instead, just put all your normal spending into it, which is easier these days with fewer places accepting cash. I've been using rewards credit cards for years, mostly to earn airline miles. I put all of my normal spending into one, and chopped and switched introductory bonuses, as did my wife, which meant we could travel the world in business or first class, paying less in cash for each hour than we would have on an economy ticket.

It's as simple as this: you spend on the card, pay it off in full each month without interest, and usually receive your rewards monthly or annually depending on the terms. It's free money if you do it right. I should add that credit cards are like fire.

A bad use of a rewards card is to pay the fee and not spend, which means you get nothing back, buy things you can't afford, don't pay in full, or miss payments, which means interest, a possible charge, and a bump
for your credit score.
