Favorite Things Gift Exchange Ideas
And today, the concept of Favorite Things has been given another life in the form of a gift exchange. An organized gift exchange offers a great way to reduce the stress and cost of searching for gifts for everyone in the group. Instead of shopping for everyone in the family or colleagues, you can draw names for something like Secret Santa or Secret Angel.
Then you are only responsible for one person's gift. My mom's book club has been enjoying her ornament exchange for years. And once, during our family's Dirty Santa gift exchange — also known as the Yankee Swap or White Elephant in some regions — the intensity rose to the point that the trunk of a decorative wooden elephant somehow smacked my infant brother in the face.
My last preference is the Favorite Things gift exchange, which doesn't have to be so hot. It's perfect for a few friends to spend time together during the holiday season while wrapping up fun new treats. Here's how it worked for me. We regularly gather for a small holiday party with three other families, actually our Urban family.
Gift Exchanges: Dirty Santa, White Elephant, Yankee Swap
The moms in the group scheduled a time for our own holiday parties and agreed to make it a Favorite Thing gift exchange for the second year in a row. The four of us started thinking about the little things we loved this year as gift ideas, the little things that make life better.

We choose a dollar limit, maybe $10 or even $5. (Gifts for three close friends for $15? Total bargain.) I bought three of the same items for our exchange. There is no need to engrave our mother's brain with creative, individualized gifts and packaging. In the exchange, we took turns opening gifts from one friend at a time, and the giver explained why she chose that item and why she loves it.
We each walked away with three special little treats, plus the pleasure of hanging out together and maybe even learning something new about what makes our friends tick. These are the favorites we brought to the table this year: Other gift exchange ideas can include a large toothpick, lotion, candle, trendy hair bows, fancy pen, earrings, paper clips and chocolates.
These ideas are similar to what you might put in an Easter stocking or basket. But with the added benefit of being tried and tested and found to actually be someone's favorite thing. If you're wondering if this Christmas gift exchange idea is just for women, there's no need to limit yourself.
How To Have A Favorite Things Gift Exchange
The husbands in our group came up with their own version. Everyone brings a six-pack of beer; exchange them; come home with a diverse package. Honestly, wives spend a lot more time discussing our choices than husbands do. The most important thing is that we laugh together and enjoy learning what each friend likes.
