Favorite Things Gift Exchange
And today, the concept of Favorite Things has taken on another life in the form of the gift exchange. Organized gift exchanges are a great way to reduce the stress and cost of finding gifts for everyone in a group. Instead of shopping for everyone in the family or for co-workers, you can draw names for something like Santa Claus or Secret Angel.
Then you are only responsible for one person's gift. My mom's book club has enjoyed her ornament exchange for many years in a row. And once, during our family's Dirty Santa gift exchange - known as a Yankee Swap or White Elephant Swap in some regions - the intensity somehow rose to such a level that a decorative wooden elephant trunk hit my minor brother in the face.
My last option is the Favorites Things gift exchange, which doesn't have to be so heated. It's perfect for a bunch of friends to enjoy some time together during the holiday season while still packing fun new treats. This is how it worked for me.
Gift Exchanges: Dirty Santa, White Elephant, Yankee Swap
We regularly get together for a little holiday party with three other families, basically our Urban Family. The moms in the group scheduled our own holiday party time and agreed to make it a Favorite Things gift exchange for the second year in a row.

The four of us started thinking of little things we loved this year as gift ideas, little things that make life better. We choose a dollar limit, maybe $10 or even $5. (Gifts for three close friends for $15? Total bargain.) I bought three of the same item for our exchange.
No need to rack our mom's brains with creative individual gifts and wraps. In our exchange, we took turns opening one friend's gifts at a time, while the giver explained why she chose that item and why she loves it. We each walked away with three special little meals, as well as the joy of hanging out together and maybe even learning something new about what makes our friends tick.
Here are the favorites we brought to the table this year: Other gift exchange ideas include a large toothpick, lotion, candle, trendy hair bows, fancy pen, earrings, paper clips and chocolates. These ideas are similar to what you can put in stockings or an Easter basket.
How To Have A Favorite Things Gift Exchange
But with the added advantage that they have been tried and found to be, in fact, someone's favorite. If you're wondering if this Christmas gift exchange idea is just for women, there's no need for boundaries. The husbands in our group came up with their own version.
Everyone brings a six pack of beer; trade them around; come home with a variety pack. Honestly, wives spend a lot more time talking about our choices than husbands do. The most important thing is that we laugh together and enjoy learning what each friend loves.
