Banda Aceh is the capital of the Indonesian province of Aceh on the island of Sumatra. It was the capital of the Aceh Sultanate when it was founded in the late 15th century. Banda, located at the tip of Sumatra, has long been a strategic, transportation and trade center in the eastern Indian Ocean and a major trading port between the region, India and Arabia.
About 150,000 people died in the Banda Aceh tsunami on 26 December 2004. Some parts of the city were permanently submerged. Since then many aid agencies have been present to help rebuild. The long conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was temporarily resolved with a peace agreement on 15 August 2005.
