I can only write from the perspective of a sister of someone who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, the daughter of two physicians specializing in neurology, psychiatry and psychotherapy, a physical therapist, a yoga teacher and a seeker of spiritual wisdom. So I understand both sides, the Western medical approach to this mental illness and the indigenous shamanic understanding of a sensitive, spiritually gifted person and a tormented soul.
It has been 16 years since my brother was first diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He tried to commit suicide three times in the same night, but he couldn't because of his mental state, his mind was so far from reality that he couldn't do it.

At first, as a family, we didn't know how to deal with it. We did not understand what was happening with my brother. My mother, who is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, told him that if he came off his medication and had another episode as a son, she would kick him out and fire him.

We learned a lot from him. As a family, we have grown very close and support each other on our life journeys with much love, respect and understanding. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many families. For this reason, I want to shed some light on this issue so that family and friends can understand.
In early childhood, my brother always seemed different from other children. From a very young age he knew all about dinosaurs and snakes, often wandering off, spending hours in the wild, only to come back with a snake he had caught. One day, while he was on vacation in France, he saw a man trying to kill a snake.
Apparently, the man thought that the snake would pose a threat. My brother saw the snake as harmless and ran to find my father to help stop the man. I will never forget how my brother suffered with this animal to see him die in his hands.
