No, it is not mandatory. In fact, I had one instructor tell me they don't get year-end gifts (gasp)! However, after spending the year together, many students/families give their teachers a little something to show appreciation and love! I'm in about 47 "dance mom" Facebook groups.
It's a question I've been asked a few times recently! I asked seven of our studio's incredible teachers to give me their brutally honest take on the perfect student/family gift. Here in Eastern Washington, there is no shortage of coffee companies to choose from. Starbucks, Dutch Bros, Roasters and more.
If you don't know your favorite, just pick one and I'm sure it will be appreciated no matter what! And coffee makes sense! Teachers spend countless hours outside of class preparing music, curriculum, and choreography. This is in addition to the time you spend in classes with your children and a few others.

Dance Recital Gift Season Is Upon Us!
I only have 2 kids and they are exhausting me. Many of our instructors have children of their own. They are also tired. Give them coffee. Almost every instructor I asked responded with this (besides coffee...). A simple, personal little thank you note and hug.
Instructors get to know your children. They laugh with them and face their challenges and care for them. A little "hey, we love you too and appreciate everything this year" means a ton. You can attach a photo of your dancer to the instructor so they have a lifetime memory.
You can add a $5 coffee gift card. Rose. Just give the card yourself with the illegible signature of 3-year-old baby ballerinas. It will be cherished no matter what. Thinking of buying a lot of dance dresses and dance shoes? So should your instructors! While any instructor will be happy to give you a hug and a thank you and expect nothing more, it's a safe bet if you're struggling with an idea to get them!
Discount Dance, Dancewear Solutions and more. "Hey, $10 for a pair of new ballet shoes" will put a smile on their face. Practicality goes a long way. A gift card to a dancewear or dance supply company helps. I'm not sure what they need or want.

But What To Get Them?!
Usually dance teachers are full of life and personality, at least we all are. Silly socks, glitter cups, a bunch of cakes (by the way, these are all direct quotes) from our teachers 😉) Small and handmade, like a hand-painted picture. Remember - your instructor will love that you take the time to think of them and do something special for them.
It doesn't have to be expensive or extravagant. 'I don't have to be Pinterest or showcase worthy. I know its cliché... but I'm quoting directly from the instructor here and the most important thing to remember at the end of the day... is just a small gesture.
It will show your instructor that they are loved and appreciated and that you are thinking about them. I love that you went straight to the dance teacher! It's easy to overthink gift giving, but it helps to remind us that a thoughtful gift is always appreciated! What fun ideas! I studied dance and never got a year-end present. I thought nothing of it but any of these would make my day!!
