By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the documents before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents.

There are direct night buses, with journey times ranging from 9 hours to 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices in Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices range from 110,000 Rp on a bus with normal seats to 200,000 Rp on a bus with wide seats.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are generally longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1 hour journey, Jakarta, a journey of 2 hours and 40 minutes, or Singapore, nearly 4 hours. There is no longer a bus serving the airport. The only way to reach the city area is by taxi from the airport, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is the port of Belawan, near Medan. Receives vessels from Batam, Indonesia (a common route from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transportation are the becak (motorcycle taxi) and the labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of post-tsunami cash, locals have become accustomed to excessive charges, but now stabilization has returned.

The mall has over 100 stores including food stores, grocery stores and clothing stores. The staple of Aceh breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open throughout the unspoiled part of town, and fruit carts are ubiquitous. There are some good cafes with relaxing views of the rice paddies around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of the city. Three fast food chain restaurants can be found downtown, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude is all you need to get by in this small town. However, there are some points to remember. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than most European cities, it's still best not to go out alone after 10pm.

As Sharia law applies, consumption of alcohol is not permitted, although it is still possible. Violation of the locally known interpretation of Sharia law can result in arrest by Sharia police and physical punishment and public ridicule meted out to an offending Muslim. Muslim women must normally wear head scarves in public areas.
Western-style bathing suits are not recommended, except in Sabang. Pickpocket activity is rare, but be aware and aware in crowded areas.
