Correction Officer Gift - New York has a problem with prison guards. Another former New York City corrections officer, Katrina Patterson, was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for accepting more than $34,000 in bribes to smuggle contraband into Rikers Island. U.S. District Judge Carol B. Amon handed down the sentence in federal court in Brooklyn.

This is the third prison guard in just over a month to plead guilty or be convicted of taking bribes to smuggle contraband to New York inmates. The other two officers are Jeremy Monk, a former Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) guard who pleaded guilty in March, and Kwadele Joseph, another MDC guard who pleaded guilty a week ago.
Patterson, 32, previously worked for the New York Department of Corrections (DOC), overseeing inmates at Rikers Island. According to court documents and information presented at sentencing, Patterson accepted at least $34,090 in bribes from associates to smuggle contraband, including cellphones and drugs, into the Robert N. Devoren Center on Rikers Island.
Michael Ross, an inmate incarcerated on an unrelated charge, arranged for the bribe to be sent to Patterson. During the search, DOC found drugs and a cell phone in Ross' cell. Law enforcement officials discovered text messages between Patterson and a co-conspirator discussing contraband, in which Patterson said, "Better wrap up multiple times because you don't want to smell it."

Ross pleaded guilty to bribing Patterson in July 2022, and Judge Amon sentenced him to 18 months in prison, which would go from 16 years to life in prison.
