This amount is more than what was shown in 2020. The most famous among the scams is the Target gift card, which has had nearly $35 million withdrawn from customer accounts, more than double that of any other brand. Even worse, when consumers paid $2,500 with Target gift cards, the average amount was higher than with other brands of cards, with nearly a third losing $5,000 or more.

Fraudsters also trick consumers into buying gift cards — regardless of the card's brand — at Target more often than anywhere else. According to the FTC, about 40,000 consumers reported using gift cards to make fraudulent payments during that time. Often, scammers pose as large companies or government agencies.

Gift card fraud is on the rise. Since 2018, the number of users reporting that their gift cards have been used as payment by fraudsters and the amount of messages they have lost is increasing. The FTC report also notes that, on average, consumers lose between $700 and $1,000 to fraud when paying with credit cards.
