In 2007, he became the first Marine since the Vietnam War to be awarded the Medal of Honor. In the years since his death, his story of courage and sacrifice has been told and retold. His Medal of Honor citation is read to Marine recruits during the Crucible at boot camp.
And his name adorns the USS Jason Dunham, where his blue uniform sits in a neat display case on the deck, a sacred place for a young man who gave his life to his brothers in arms. Now, the Marines who served with Dunham are sharing his story in their own words, and a small group of veterans and filmmakers are helping them do so as part of The Gift, a crowd-funded documentary chronicling his life and legacy.
On April 14, 2004, Dunham was leading his unit in Husaybah, Iraq, searching for militants who had just attacked their commanding officer's group. Marines set up a convoy of vehicles to conduct a rapid search, looking for insurgents trying to flee - or regroup for another attack.

Something caught Dunham's eye - a white SUV, three cars behind. As he lined up, his fellow Marines, Pfc. Kelly Miller and Lance Cpl. Bill Hampton, followed. When they got to the car they saw weapons on the back seat - AK and RPG. That's when the driver jumped out and attacked Dunham.
