This guide is a great step-by-step guide for new sewists. I hate spending money on wrapping paper, rummaging through boxes, awkwardly sized packages...and don't even get me started on ribbons, bows, and silly decorations. Gack. Plus, your room is a huge mess after the presents are opened.
Some wrapping paper can be recycled, some can't, and there's a ton of paper in your trash. A few years ago I decided to make fabric gift bags of all sizes to use as Christmas gifts. With a little work, I realized I didn't need to buy rolling paper again.
At the end of the day, I realized that no one had returned the gift bags. So here I am making another set of reusable gift bags. This time I took a picture and you will too. You don't need any sewing skills to make these bags.

Why Make Your Own Gift Bags?
Even if you don't have a sewing machine (or use a hot glue gun with fabric glue - I won't tell), you can sew by hand. Homemade gift bags are versatile. You can make large gift bags for large or odd-shaped gifts, or small bags for jewelry or crystals—the process is the same for any size bag.
Use light muslin and make a bag that you can take to the farmer's market or grocery store; choose a fun print and make a bag for kids blocks or LEGOs; or make a bag for your birthday. Cloth gift bags are reusable and eco-friendly.
Most packaging paper and tape is thrown away or cannot be recycled, creating more waste in an already overburdened system. Cloth gift bags can be reused, washed, repaired and reused. If you have empty friends or family, they will be shared and passed down from year to year.
DIY gift bags are inexpensive. Holiday fabric usually comes out a month or two before the holidays, and a yard of fabric can cost around $3. You can get 8-10 reusable gift bags for less than the price of a paper bag! Turn the fabric to make it wrong side out.

Fold over the top two inches so that it falls to the edge of the fabric. Pull the holes straight from the stitched piece to the edge of the fabric and sew to stay in place. Repeat on all four corners. When you reach the side pieces, stop and pull the seam straight from the bottom to cover the sides.
Sew 1/4 inch from each top flap, iron to stay and topstitch. Fold all the top pieces down and form a cord tunnel. Do not sew the bag closed (ask me how I know). Repeat on the other side. Measure how much ribbon you need and put a clip on the end to make it easier to thread the ribbon through the fabric tunnel.
Tie the tape down one side of the tunnel, over the "buckle" and down the other side. The knot ends. Starting from the reverse side of the tape, you can pull the knots to close the bag. Here! How cool is that? Now you have gift bags that are reusable, washable and can hold gifts of any size or shape.
