The Best Chinatown Shops
When you think of shops in Chinatown, your mind probably goes to tourist shops. There are many, but recently some beautiful luxury shops such as jewelry have been popping up, making Chinatown more than just a place to go for Chinese food, bubble tea and karaoke.

Not recommended for claustrophobic types, the gill-filled furniture and gift shop has a diverse (and somewhat messy) inventory. There's a wall of metal bracelets ($9.99 each); there are paper lanterns ($5.99) and tall pots and pans.
Electronic lotus flowers ($29.99) buried in the back glow with different colors and emit strange music that sounds like; You will also find giant Pokemon creatures here. But amidst all the chaos is a goldmine of beautiful kitchen accessories. To the right of the entrance, an aisle full of dishes features rice bowls decorated with smiling, baby-blue dogs or pink-looking cats ($3.99).

There are also richly sculpted teapots ($29.99) and sculpted fish plates adorned with floral prints ($8.99.) This popular patisserie has pop songs for sweet tooths looking at a line of Lucite trash where the packaging is beautiful, which they rule. Donan's Strawberry Caramel Candies come in baby pink boxes decorated with smiling strawberries;
A small koala bear smiles inside the shiny green bags of Lotte chocolate biscuits. There are also delicious items like Baked Wheat Crackers ($1.95), Mushroom Soup ($15 per half pound) and Vacuum Fried Green Beans ($10 per half pound). Coolers contain Asian soft drinks decorated with fruit cartons ($1.95).

With coolers at the back and rows of bottles at the front – and perhaps, like our visitor, a worker on top of a pile of boxes eating lunch – this wine shop has a casual setting and a casual atmosphere. Of course, the store specializes in Asian wines, and the wine selection includes lychee wine ($12.99), Chinese wine ($25.99), and bright reds ($6.99).
Perhaps the heaviest yet: Hello Kitty Sparkling Wine Rose ($28.99). There are also products that may be better known in Chicago's mainstream stores, such as Gray Goose vodka and Opus One wines from California. Offering bright goods since 1995, this small, family-owned shop has a win-win policy.
Chinatown Farmers Market
Inside, friendly staff stand behind shiny tables filled with various trinkets. There are diamond rings, watches, 24-carat gold jewelry (a traditional Chinese festival gift) and jade earrings, bracelets ($900-$1,300) and Buddha statues ($87). The cartoon sign that adorns the store's exterior sets the tone for what's inside this friendly gift shop.
In the first episode, Hello Kitty is, well, everything. The adorable white creature appears on giant character notebooks ($20-$30) and on mugs, lunch boxes and toothpick holders. Other gift items — many suitable for children's birthday parties — include folding origami kits ($1.95), small "glass" bottles that hold miniature notebooks and colorful paper umbrellas.
In the back of the space, intricately designed scarves, silk robes (still a bit scratchy) ($27), slippers ($8.99) and even kung fu shoes. With a pocket-sized department store layout—think shiny counters and white-coated staff—this store specializes in Shiseido products. It has five rows under the Japanese company's umbrella (which, we're told, is more than you'll find in the average luxury segment).

Products include modern skincare tools like Korean BB Cream ($30); Also available is Dolly Wink "Kiss Me" Japanese Shiny Shampoo and Mascara ($19.99). Along one wall is a selection of masks from my beauty diary filled with everything from caviar to Mexican cactus. Available in a box or in individual sheets (about $2 each)—if there's an open box behind the counter—the masks are aimed at brightening, exfoliating, or hydrating the skin.
Main Street Launch
The name says it all: There are a lot of woks, a lot of cooking stuff and so on. A hardware store-meets-kitchen feel, the store (but not too crowded) carries brooms and WD-40; Employees can also create spare keys in no time. Along one wall, look for a large silver plate that rises to 28 inches wide ($70), bamboo steamers and mugs with painted pandas ($5.99).
