However, material adaptation is not an easy task. In fact, teachers lack sufficient knowledge about developing language teaching materials due to lack of experience and understanding of content adaptation and a tendency to rely heavily on textbooks. Therefore, this study aims to examine the ways in which teachers adapt to teaching materials, the benefits of these teaching materials for language learning and the challenges they face.
A qualitative case study framework was used in this study. Data were collected from one respondent using documents, classroom observations and interviews. The results of the study show that the teacher adapts the content as suggested by McDonough, Shaw, and Masuhara (2013), which means adding, deleting, modifying, simplifying, and reorganizing the content brought into the classroom.
In addition, adapted materials can be used to facilitate language learning and are consistent with materials development principles. Apart from that, some of the adaptations made still show concerns such as lack of a section to express responses to the materials, inappropriate level of difficulty, presence of anxiety-provoking activities and widespread use.
