When you shop online, your credit card is not actually charged. The card processor will first check with your bank or credit card company to make sure you have enough credit to complete the purchase. Your bank or credit card issuer will then place a hold or pending charge on the amount of the planned purchase on your card.

The card processor will then ensure that the rest of the information entered (such as your address) is correct, and if everything is correct, the transaction will be processed. If not, for example if you enter an incorrect address, the transaction will be declined. In either case, the bank or credit card issuer will still only include the pending charge on your account.

The transaction is only finalized in the early evening, when the card processor sends a final confirmation of all the day's transactions to the banks as described above. So if you declined 3 transactions and accepted one at 2:00 PM, then checked your bank at 3:15 PM, you would still see all 4 transactions in your account.
