An estimated 150,000 people died in the December 26, 2004 tsunami in Banda Aceh. Some parts of the city were permanently submerged. Since then, many aid agencies have assisted in the recovery. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was temporarily resolved with the August 15, 2005 peace agreement.
Since then, the peace process has been relatively smooth. In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, Irwandi Yusuf, the first democratically elected governor, was inaugurated. Banda Aceh has a tropical forest climate with stable average temperature. The average annual temperature of this city is 27 degrees Celsius.
However, the city experiences wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. There is no real dry season in Banda Aceh and the average rainfall is less than 60 mm. On average, the city receives a little less than 2000 mm of rain per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Jalan Surah) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can get a 30-day visa at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the documents before noon, but this should only apply to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop overnight buses from Medan to Banda Aceh that take 9-13 hours. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have their offices on Jl. Gaja Mada, Madan. Prices range from Rs 110,000 for a regular bus to Rs 200,000 for a wide seater bus.
Minibuses can take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journeys are usually longer. The prices are a little cheaper than the coach. You can also reach Banda Aceh from Medan via Kutakan and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan with a journey of 1 hour, Jakarta with 2 hours and 40 minutes or Singapore with a journey of nearly 4 hours. There is no bus to the airport anymore. The only way into the city is by airport taxi, which costs INR 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the left side after exiting the entrance gate. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when arriving from Singapore).
The Penang ferry is no longer active. From Ulhi Lhi you can go to Pulau Veh and Pulau Aceh from Banda Aceh port. The main methods of commuting are bakak (mototaxi) and lobby lobby (public minibus). Locals got used to overcharging due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, but now stability has returned.

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but most were non-Muslim religious organizations and their licenses were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.
There are also small souvenir shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace shopping center is located in the center of Banda Aceh. This shopping center has more than 100 shops, including grocery stores, supermarkets and clothing stores. An Acehnese breakfast is nasi guriya, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere.
Padang grocery stores and restaurants are open in the untouched part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere. Along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of the city, around Oli Karang, there are good coffee shops with a relaxing view of the rice fields.

Three fast food chain restaurants such as A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut can be found in the center. As with all travel, this is what you need to get along well in a small town. However, there are some nuances to consider. Although Banda Aceh is currently safer than many European cities, it is best not to go out alone after 10pm.

Since Sharia has come into effect, drinking alcohol is prohibited, although it is still possible. Violation of local interpretations of Sharia law can result in the arrest of the offending Muslim Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule. Muslim women are generally required to wear headscarves in public.
